IN a move to curb the proliferation of gambling advertisements and mitigate potential addiction, the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (Pagcor) has ordered the immediate removal of all gambling-related billboards and out-of-home advertisements nationwide.
The directive, issued on July 7th and effective August 15th, affects all gaming licensees, operators, suppliers, and system administrators.
Pagcor Chairman and CEO Alejandro H. Tengco announced the crackdown on Friday, July 11th, stating that the agency aims to create a “safer and more responsible” gaming environment.
The order covers all forms of gambling advertising, including static and digital materials displayed on public transportation such as trains, buses, jeepneys, and taxis.
Licensees were given until July 16th to submit an inventory of existing advertisements, detailing size, materials, location, contract expiration dates, and Ad Standards Council (ASC) permit numbers.
Tengco emphasized that only institutional or responsible gaming campaigns will be permitted going forward, all subject to Pagcor’s approval. Replacement of removed advertisements with new gambling ads is strictly prohibited. Non-compliance will result in penalties.
Tengco highlighted the agency’s dual mandate: to regulate the gaming industry and generate revenue for national development while simultaneously protecting vulnerable populations, particularly the youth, from the risks associated with gambling addiction.
The removal of pervasive gambling advertisements is seen as a critical step in achieving this balance.
