PCG spokesperson Tarriela files cyber libel complaint vs Sass Sasot

admin July 4, 2025

PHILIPPINE Coast Guard (PCG) Western Pacific Seaboard spokesperson Commodore Jay Tarriela has filed a cyber libel complaint against journalist Sass Rogando Sasot.

The complaint stems from several social media posts by Sasot accusing Tarriela of corruption, bribery, dishonesty, and misconduct. Tarriela is seeking ₱1.25 million in damages, claiming that Sasot’s repeated and unsubstantiated accusations have caused significant reputational harm.

The complaint highlights the increasing use of social media platforms to disseminate potentially defamatory information and the legal challenges this presents.

The case underscores the delicate balance between freedom of expression and the protection of individuals from false and malicious accusations.

While journalists play a crucial role in holding public officials accountable, the line between legitimate criticism and libelous statements can be blurry.

Tarriela’s legal action will test the boundaries of online speech and the extent to which individuals can be held liable for damaging statements made on social media. The outcome of this case will have implications for future cases involving online defamation and could influence how public figures and journalists navigate the complexities of online discourse.
