FORMER Senate President Franklin Drilon has called for a special session of Congress to allow the Senate to immediately convene as an impeachment court to hear the complaint against Vice President Sara Duterte.
Drilon, speaking on Saturday, February 8th, emphasized the urgency of the situation. “The special session is necessary to start the process…because the impeachment court can only be convened upon the referral by the Senate of the impeachment complaint in a plenary session,” he stated. “After the impeachment court is convened, it will have its own life.”
The Buhay ang People Power Network, a coalition of church leaders, civil society groups, and NGOs, has also urged the Senate to hold a special session to establish the impeachment court as mandated by the Constitution.
The Senate adjourned on Wednesday without addressing the impeachment complaint against Vice President Duterte, which was transmitted to the House on the same day it was signed by 215 members of the House of Representatives.
The regular session of Congress is scheduled to resume on June 2nd, following the May 12th midterm elections.
