SENATOR Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa is facing widespread condemnation for his verbal attack on Akbayan Representative Perci Cendaña.
The senator’s remarks, delivered without awareness of Rep. Cendaña’s status as a stroke survivor, have been widely criticized as insensitive and harmful.
The incident underscores the ongoing discrimination faced by individuals with disabilities in the Philippines. Dela Rosa’s comments, according to health advocates, perpetuate harmful stereotypes and deepen the stigma surrounding disability. His actions are seen as undermining years of advocacy for inclusivity and equal rights.
Health and medical advocates are demanding accountability. They call on the Senate to address Dela Rosa’s conduct and reaffirm its commitment to the rights and dignity of all Filipinos, especially those with disabilities.
Furthermore, a public apology to Rep. Cendaña and the disability community is demanded. The advocates emphasize that this apology must be sincere and demonstrate a commitment to learning from this mistake. The senator’s words, they argue, caused significant harm, and a genuine apology is the first step towards reconciliation.
