SENATE President Francis “Chiz” Escudero moved to reconsider the approval of the Revised Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Law on second reading during Tuesday’s plenary session, seeking to refine its provisions.
The bill, House Bill No. 10841, aims to strengthen the PCG through policy and organizational reforms, including fixing the term of the PCG commandant.
The bill was initially passed on second reading on December 18, 2024, after the interpellation and amendment periods were closed on the same day.
However, Senator Escudero expressed a desire to further refine the bill, particularly its transitory provisions.
“I believe it is in our best interest to take an opportunity to refine the provision (of the bill) and as such I’m seeking to reconsider its approval,” Escudero said.
Following the reconsideration, the bill was subsequently approved on second reading, signifying the Senate’s commitment to strengthening the PCG while ensuring the bill’s effectiveness.
The Revised PCG Law, once enacted, will introduce significant changes to the Coast Guard, including a fixed term for the commandant, aimed at promoting stability and continuity in leadership.
The bill is expected to play a crucial role in enhancing the PCG’s capacity to safeguard the country’s maritime interests and protect its territorial waters.
