ACTRESS Neri Naig-Miranda, currently detained at the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP), was transferred to a hospital on Friday evening, November 29, for a medical evaluation.
BJMP Spokesperson JSupt. Jayrex Bustinera confirmed the transfer, stating that the court, upon the request of Miranda’s lawyer, ordered the move. The court mandated that the medical evaluation should not exceed five days.
“The court directed the BJMP to bring Ms. Miranda to a hospital for a medical evaluation,” JSupt. Bustinera said. “The duration of this evaluation is limited to five days.”
Bustinera further clarified that during the standard intake process, no health issues were observed in Miranda.
“We conducted a standard health evaluation during the intake process, and there were no noted health issues,” he explained.
The reason for the medical evaluation has not been disclosed.
The actress was arrested on November 23, 2024, in Pasay City, Philippines, for alleged violations of the Securities Regulation Code. The charges stem from her endorsement of Dermacare, a beauty clinic chain that was found to be soliciting investments without proper registration.
The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) issued an advisory in September 2023, stating that Dermacare, specifically its Chief Operating Officer Chanda Atienza, was offering investment agreements promising high returns to potential franchise partners. This was deemed an “unauthorized investment solicitation without SEC registration.”
The SEC’s advisory also warned that endorsers, influencers, brokers, dealers, salesmen, agents, and promoters of Dermacare could face charges.
Naig, in a Facebook post on September 1, 2023, distanced herself from Dermacare, stating that any transactions made under her name by the company were unauthorized and done without her consent.
Despite this, Naig was arrested on a warrant for 14 counts of violation of Section 28 of Republic Act 8799, the Securities Regulation Code. The bail for each count was set at P126,000, totaling over P1.7 million.
Naig’s husband, Chito Miranda, has publicly defended his wife, stating that she was merely an endorser and had no involvement in the company’s operations. He also claimed that she was arrested without proper notice or a criminal complaint being filed against her.
Naig’s arraignment was initially scheduled for November 28, but it was moved to January 9, 2025, following a motion to quash the complaints.
The case is still ongoing, and Naig’s legal team is working to have the charges against her dismissed.
