FORMER President Rodrigo Duterte has challenged the International Criminal Court (ICC) to expedite its investigation into the killings that occurred during his administration, stating he wants the probe concluded while he is still alive.
Duterte, who withdrew the Philippines from the ICC in 2019 when it began its preliminary examination of the complaint against him, made the statement on Wednesday during his appearance before the House of Representatives’ Quad Committee, which is investigating drug war killings.
He even expressed his willingness to welcome ICC investigators to the country.
“I’m asking the ICC to hurry up, and if possible, they can come here and start the investigation tomorrow,” Duterte said when asked about his cooperation with the ICC.
He expressed concern that the investigation has been ongoing for too long.
“This issue has been left hanging for so many years. It’s taking so long, I might die before they can investigate me,” he said.
Duterte said he is communicating this call to Gabriela Rep. Arlene Brosas, who had inquired about the ICC.
He also asserted his willingness to face the consequences if found guilty.
“If I am found guilty, I will go to prison and rot there for all time,” he said.
The ICC is currently investigating the killings in the Philippines, but the Marcos administration has stated it will not cooperate with the investigation. However, the administration has also said it will not impede the ICC’s efforts if it wishes to interview individuals in the country.
