Marcos, Yoon discuss strengthening bilateral ties, promoting international law

admin October 7, 2024

THE Philippines and South Korea need to join forces in promoting a rules-based international order governed by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and the 2016 Arbitral Award.

During a bilateral meeting with South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, the President stated that it is time for the two countries to elevate their relationship to a strategic level.

President Marcos emphasized the need for concrete actions to strengthen bilateral ties, especially in the face of a complex geopolitical environment, to ensure prosperity for both nations and uphold an international rules-based order underpinned by laws such as the 1982 UNCLOS and the binding 2016 Arbitral Award.

He highlighted the strong partnership between the Philippines and South Korea in various areas of cooperation, including defense and security, maritime cooperation, trade, development, and people-to-people exchanges.

President Marcos expressed optimism for the future of their relationship, stating that there is only room for growth. South Korea has expressed concerns about the aggressive actions of Chinese forces in the South China Sea.

President Marcos thanked President Yoon for the invitation to the Philippines, coinciding with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. He looks forward to a meaningful meeting that will enhance cooperation not only at the political level but also in trade, defense, security, and other areas of mutual interest.
