SENATE President Francis “Chiz” Escudero said he considers it being a gentleman to help a lady, after a video of him with the First Lady Liza Araneta Marcos went viral.
The video from the Vin d’Honneur in Malacañang on Independence Day showed Marcos taking a wine glass from Escudero, sipping from it, and then handing it back to him.
“I consider waiting on a lady (first or otherwise) to be gentlemanly,” Escudero said.
He said some may consider it old fashioned or may view him as being subservient, but for him, being a gentleman and showing respect to others will never go out of style.
Netizens ridiculed Escudero after the video was posted online, calling him “alipin” (slave) and “alalay” (assistant).
Others said he was made Senate President only to be treated like a waiter by the First Lady.
The First Lady was not spared from comment, with one netizen calling her “Thirst Lady.”
Another wondered how she treats others without a high position, considering she treats the Senate President that way.
Also in the video were President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., Speaker Martin Romualdez, Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo, Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin. The leaders attended the Vin d’Honneur coinciding the celebration of the 126th anniversary of Independence Day at the Malacañang.
