Romualdez urges peaceful resolution for seized cargo ship, swift return of Pinoy seafarers

admin April 16, 2024

SPEAKER Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez on Tuesday called for a prompt and peaceful resolution to the recent seizure by Iranian authorities of a Portuguese-flagged container ship, which included four Filipino seafarers among its crew.

The leader of the 300-plus-strong House of Representatives expressed deep concern for the welfare of the Filipino seafarers aboard the MSC Aries at the time of its seizure by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on Saturday morning near the Strait of Hormuz.

“In times of crisis, our foremost concern is the safety and security of our Filipino seafarers. We call for a peaceful resolution to swiftly resolve this distressing situation and ensure their prompt return home,” Speaker Romualdez said.

The House chief cited the reassuring efforts of the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), acting under the directives of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” R. Marcos Jr., in providing extensive government support and aid to the families of the seafarers.

He noted that the DMW is also actively collaborating with the Department of Foreign Affairs, the licensed manning agency, ship manager, and operator to facilitate the swift release of the Filipino seafarers.

“The seizure of the MSC Aries deeply troubles us because it poses a potential threat to the safety of our Filipino seafarers. Ensuring their safety and well-being is the government’s utmost priority,” the Speaker stressed.

Speaker Romualdez underscored the crucial importance of international collaboration and the urgent need for a peaceful resolution.

“Now more than ever, global cooperation is essential to navigate through this challenging situation,” Speaker Romualdez said.

“We must work together towards a peaceful resolution to ensure the safety and well-being of all involved parties,” he added.

Iran’s state-run IRNA News Agency reported the seizure of MSC Aries by IRGC’s Special Naval Force near the Strait of Hormuz, alleging its connection to Israel. The vessel’s operator confirmed the seizure and is currently collaborating with relevant authorities to ensure the safe return and well-being of its 25 crew members, including the four Filipinos.
