THE Phivolcs said Monday no tsunami threat to the Philippines has been detected following a massive earthquake that rocked central Japan and its western coast.
In an advisory, the monitoring agency said that the 7.4 quake struck at 3:10 p.m. Philippines time (4:10 p.m. Japan time) near Honshu’s west coast.
According to Japanese public broadcaster NHK, the quake triggered waves of around 1 meter along parts of the Sea of Japan coast with a larger wave expected. The Japan Meteorological Agency, which measured a preliminary magnitude of 7.6, issued tsunami warnings for the coastal prefectures of Ishikawa, Niigata and Toyama. Russia also issued tsunami warnings in its far eastern cities of Vladivostok and Nakhodka.
