Speaker sends Rep. Tulfo for relief efforts in aftermath of Southern Mindanao quake

admin November 18, 2023

SPEAKER Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez, who is currently accompanying President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on official business in the United States, has designated House Deputy Majority Leader for Communications and ACT-CIS Partylist Rep. Erwin Tulfo to assess the damage and identify resources required for relief and recovery following the 6.8 magnitude earthquake that struck Southern Mindanao on Friday.

According to Speaker Romualdez, the devastation caused by the earthquake requires a comprehensive and rapid response to ensure the safety and well-being of those affected.

“With deep concern and a sense of urgency, we address the impact of the earthquake on Southern Mindanao. Deputy Majority Leader for Communications Erwin Tulfo will assume a crucial role on my behalf, assessing the damage and identifying essential resources to support the affected communities,” Speaker Romualdez said.

In response, Tulfo affirmed his dedication to the task and expressed gratitude for being entrusted with this responsibility by the Speaker.

“Our focus will be on understanding the immediate needs of the affected areas and ensuring a coordinated and efficient response to aid in the relief and recovery process,” Tulfo said.

Tulfo is scheduled to arrive in General Santos City on Sunday morning, where he is actively coordinating with the ground commander of Tingog Partylist. During his visit, he will meet with General Santos City Mayor Lorelie Geronimo Pacquiao and Sarangani Gov. Rogelio “Ruel” Pacquiao.

Following the earthquake’s news and its impact, House Deputy Secretary General Sofonias “Ponyong” P. Gabonada announced that the offices of Speaker Romualdez and Tingog Partylist led by Reps. Yedda Marie K. Romualdez and Jude Acidre promptly facilitated the release of P20 million in aid. Simultaneously, 5,000 food packs are being prepared as initial assistance in two congressional districts affected by the earthquake.

Additionally, Gabonada said the two offices will dispatch construction materials to aid affected residents in repairing and rebuilding their homes damaged by the earthquake.

Gabonada said the Davao City and GenSan Tingog Teams are gearing up to provide an initial 5,000 relief goods, evenly distributed among the districts of Reps. Steve Chiongbian Solon and Loreto Acharon of Saranggani and South Cotabato, respectively.

He said the Speaker’s office is actively coordinating with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and district lawmakers to ensure the prompt release of quick response funds for the rehabilitation of affected public structures such as bridges and school buildings.
