Speaker says House greatest asset is its employees

admin November 13, 2023

SPEAKER Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez on Monday praised personnel of the House of Representatives, including congressional staff, for their hard work and dedication to duty, saying they are the chamber’s principal strength.

“We recognize that our greatest asset is not the walls that surround us, nor the laws we pass, but the people who work tirelessly to uphold the pillars of our democracy,” Speaker Romualdez told House employees during their flag-raising ceremony.

Speaker Romualdez, leader of the 300-plus strong House of Representatives, expressed his “deepest gratitude” to them.

“Your hard work, dedication, and resilience are the driving forces behind our remarkable achievements. Let us continue to work hand in hand, with integrity and commitment, as we steer this House towards greater heights,” Speaker Romualdez said.

He said the House leadership has been trying to appropriately compensate its workforce and to improve their working environment.

“In our ongoing efforts, we have successfully implemented salary improvements that honor your invaluable contributions to our legislative work. These adjustments are a testament to our recognition of your hard work and dedication. Furthermore, we have continuously worked on enriching your benefits package,” he said.

Recognizing the crucial role of mothers, the House leader pointed out that the chamber’s leadership has taken steps to support and empower them within their offices.

He added that the Department of Health has certified the House of Representatives as a “Mother-Baby Friendly Workplace.”

The Speaker also enumerated the various programs and physical renovations the House is undertaking to improve its personnel’s skills and working conditions.

“In our commitment to inclusivity and diversity, we have rolled out comprehensive gender and development training. This initiative underscores our dedication to promoting a work environment that respects and celebrates gender equality, ensuring everyone’s voice is heard and valued,” he said.

Another training program focuses on project management, which would allow employees to execute complex projects efficiently, he said.

On the infrastructure front, he revealed that he was excited about ongoing constructions and plans in the pipeline.

“The construction of a permanent secretariat building is underway, a testament to our commitment to providing a stable and conducive work environment for our staff. In the realm of technology, we are undergoing a network modernization project. This upgrade will not only enhance our digital infrastructure but also ensure that we stay connected and efficient in this rapidly evolving digital age,” he said.

The House is also establishing the Institute for Legislation and Legislative Governance, which the Speaker said would “serve as a beacon of knowledge and learning, enriching our understanding and skills in legislation and governance.”

Additionally, in progress is the construction of a permanent warehouse, which will store and manage House resources.

“We have also not forgotten the importance of health and wellness. A state-of-the-art sport and fitness center, including a basketball court, is in the works. This facility will provide a space for physical activity and relaxation, promoting a healthy work-life balance,” Speaker Romualdez said.

“Pangako po namin sa inyo: ibabalik natin ang basketball court at sports complex na dati ay pinakikinabangan ng lahat,” he told employees.

He said the House is also planning to build a medical and wellness center for its personnel and their dependents.

It would likewise construct a multi-story parking building to ensure that all of its employees would have ample parking space for their vehicles, including a dedicated area for motorcycles.

It is also renovating its north and south wing lobbies to make them more functional but symbolic of the “dignity and prestige” of the House, the Speaker said.
