IN preparation for the upcoming Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Barangay Elections (BSKE) 2023, the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) Chief, PBGen Jose Melencio Nartatez, Jr., ensures to strictly enforce the election gun ban during the election period.

In collaboration with officers from the Comelec, Nartatez attended the Ceremonial Kick-Off for the Election Period/Gun Ban of BSKE 2023 together with representatives from law enforcement agencies which was held at the Taguig Convention Center, Pedro Gil Cayetano Blvd, Taguig City on August 28, 2023.

Pursuant to Comelec resolution no. 10902, the 90-day election period for the 2023 BSKE will commence on August 28, 2023, with the filling of Certificates of Candidacy (COC) and culminates on November 29, 2023.

Prior to this, NCRPO Chief assured the public that all operational plans and activities of NCRPO will be in accordance with Comelec Resolution No. 10902 as well as enforcing all prohibitions for the 90-day election period as stated under the Omnibus Election Code and Resolutions approved by the Comelec.

With the heightened security that started at midnight of August 28, 2023, NCRPO has established 101 Comelec checkpoints region-wide. This resulted in the arrest of 10 individuals during checkpoint and police patrol/response; confiscation/seizure/recovery of 2 short firearms and 4 other kinds (Sumpak/Improvised/Homemade/Paltik/Replica), and confiscation of 17 bladed weapons and  8 ammunition.

In order to maintain peace and order in Metro Manila, Nartatez assures that NCRPO will keep up with its vigilance and increase police presence and visibility in public areas even after the gun ban period.

Further, Nartatez encourages and seeks the public to cooperate and support the implementation of the COMELEC gun ban as well as adhere to the guidelines as stated in the Omnibus Election Code to ensure a peaceful, fair, and safe conduct of BSKE 2023.

He also reminded all firearm owners to be responsible and adhere to the guidelines on gun ban. “ Only regular members or officers of the Philippine National Police, the Armed Forces of the Philippines, and other enforcement agencies of the government who are duly deputized by the COMELEC for election duty are authorized to carry and possess firearms during the election period.” PBGEN NARTATEZ, JR stated.
