THE National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) apprehended a quack doctor during an entrapment operation in San Pedro, Laguna recently.
Suspect Miriam Sol Magayanes, who was operating a clinic for 13 years now – Magayanes Psychological and Diagnostic Center — in San Pedro, Laguna, is now facing charges for violating Section 28 (Illegal Practice of Medicine) of Republic Act No. 2382, also known as the Medical Act of 1959.
The NBI-Environmental Crime Division (NBI-EnCD) took action following a tip-off about an individual allegedly posing as a mental health professional without the necessary license and qualifications.
The suspect was reported to have been conducting assessments, evaluations, and even prescribing medication to unsuspecting clients.
To verify the legitimacy of the suspect’s medical practice registration and clinic operation, EnCD operatives diligently conducted surveillance and verification with the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC).
However, the PRC’s certification revealed that the suspect did not appear in the database of licensed physicians in the Philippines.
Based on this certification, the NBI initiated an entrapment operation at the suspect’s clinic in San Pedro, Laguna, resulting in her swift arrest.
The NBI is committed to safeguarding public health and ensuring that only duly qualified medical professionals provide healthcare services in the country.
