PH logs faster internet speeds in first half of 2023

Metrosundaily July 24, 2023

THE Philippines has seen a continued rise in fixed broadband and mobile internet speeds during the first half of 2023.

According to Ookla’s latest Speedtest Global Index report, the Philippines median fixed broadband download speed has increased from 87.13 Mbps in December 2022 to 92.84 Mbps in June 2023.

Mobile internet download speed has also improved from last December’s 24.12 Mbps to this June’s 26.98 Mbps. With these statistics, the Philippines ranks 47th for fixed broadband and 83rd for mobile internet out of over 140 countries worldwide.

The report also reveals that both median download and upload speeds in the country have experienced substantial quarterly growth, marking transformative progress in the Philippines’ digital landscape. With faster internet connection, Filipino citizens, businesses, and industries are now better equipped to harness the vast potential digital technology, driving economic growth and social development.

The Department of Information and Communication Technology commits to sustain the continuing improvement of the country’s internet speed by accelerating the Philippines’ ICT infrastructure buildup, as directed by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. Through the Broadband ng Masa Program, the DICT provides the necessary infostructural interventions such as the construction of cable landing stations, building of common towers, and rollout of fiber optic cables and deploys emerging wireless and satellite technologies in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas to provide reliable broadband connectivity across the archipelago.

As President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. prepares to address the nation in the upcoming State of the Nation Address (SONA) on 24 July 2023, Filipinos can expect to learn more about “Bagong Pilipinas” along with the nation’s current economic, political, and social state. The SONA will be broadcasted nationwide and will be available on livestream on the DICT Facebook page, as well as other government pages.
