Malabon City Jail warden suspended over alleged abuses after detainees stage protest

admin June 24, 2023

MALABON Mayor Jeannie Sandoval said Malabon City Jail warden has been placed on preventive suspension after detainees staged a noise barrage on Friday to protest their mistreatment as well as the transfer of two detainees they call “mayor” to another jail.

Malabon Mayor Jeannie Sandoval said the preventive suspension was imposed while the issue is being investigated.

Sandoval also said officials would do their best to ensure peace and order in the city jail.

“Asahan po ninyo na patuloy kaming makikipagtulungan at lahat ng aksyon ay ating isasagawa para masiguro na lagi nating napapanatili ang peace and order sa loob ng City Jail,” she said on Facebook.

During their protest, the detainees banged on walls, broke glass windows, and threw down chairs.

They also held up signs saying “Bulok ang Sistema Gutom Preso” and “Kanin May Bubog.”

There were five jail officers who were held hostage inside the jail during the protest, and were later released unharmed, according to Chief Inspector Jayrex Bustinera, spokesperson of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology.

Bustinera said the detainees gave the names of jail officials who they want out of the facility.

They also demanded the return of the two detainees transferred to the Bicutan jail.

But Bustinera said the transfer of the detainees was made upon a court order, which means it could not be disregarded.

He also said the BJMP would investigate the grievances of the detainees.

If any bureau personnel are found involved in the alleged abuses, they would be held responsible for these, he said.

The Malabon City Jail male dormitory houses around 900 detainees.
