CAAP airports in northwestern Luzon gear up for super typhoon ‘Mawar’

admin May 26, 2023

THE Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) is actively implementing its preparation measures and coordinating with stakeholders in anticipation of Super Typhoon Mawar, locally known as “Betty”.

According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), the typhoon is expected to pass through the northwestern portion of Luzon by Friday or Saturday morning.

Airports that may potentially be affected include Tuguegarao Airport, Basco Airport, Itbayat Airport, Cauayan Airport, and Palanan Airport. Additionally, airports in Laoag, Vigan, and Baguio are also gearing up for possible harsh weather conditions.

As of today, CAAP Tuguegarao Airport assisted in the delivery of 1000 boxes of relief goods from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DWSD) Region 2 via C-130 aircraft from Tuguegarao to Basco Airport in preparation for the coming supertyphoon.

In a message, CAAP Area Center 2 Manager Mary Sulyn Sagorsor also said that precautionary measures are being undertaken by Tuguegarao Airport for the coming super typhoon, such as clearing of waterways and canals and cutting/pruning of branches of trees near the Passenger Terminal Building especially at the arrival area and other areas inside the airport’s premises.

CAAP has already initiated coordination meetings with stakeholders to ensure a synchronized disaster risk reduction response. Airport personnel are positioned and ready to implement necessary measures to safeguard the facilities and ensure the safety of passengers and personnel.

CAAP-operated airports are often well-prepared in the event of flight delays or possible cancellations brought by natural calamities, and utmost care is usually provided to affected passengers. To further assist stranded travelers, Malasakit Help Kits and Malasakit Help Desks are readily available at airports to address their needs.

CAAP urges the public to stay informed, and are also advised to contact their respective airlines for updates on flight schedules and any changes that may arise due to the typhoon.
